Lately, I have been watching some episodes of a sensational music/interview program fronted by musical doyen Elvis Costello. It is a great show because it melds well researched and thoughtfully written interviews with live performances by the guests and Elvis himself as well as gorgeous duets.
The show is a canadian/brittish co-production with a long list of executive producers including interestingly, Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish.
The most recent episode featured Elvis’s wife, jazz singer and musician Dianna Krall. I am an unashamed fan of Diana and was looking forward to seing the husband and wife team in action. My hopes were dashed when Elvis announced that Elton John was going to step in as special host. The show was magic. Diana sat at a piano while she chatted with Elton like long time friends, which they are. My mood lifted even higher when Elvis returned at the end of the show to perform a trio of “Makin’ Woopee” with Elton and Dianna.
Other episodes include Lou Reed, Julian Schnabel, Bill Clinton, James Taylor, Tony Bennett, The Police, Rufus Wainwright, Kris Kristofferson, Rosanne Cash, Norah Jones, John Mellencamp, Renée Fleming, Herbie Hancock, She & Him, Jenny Lewis, Jakob Dylan, Smokey Robinson and Bruce Springsteen and are all great.
It’s well worth a watch whether you are a Costello fan, a music tragic or just someone who enjoys great telly…
It’s currently showing on ABC1 on Thursday night.
